The ‘Fiqh al-Ibaadah for the Sick’ is a course for post-graduate students in the Kulliyyah of Medicine, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). It is part of the Islamic Input in Medical Practice (IIMP) program conceived in 2008. The IIMP programme for post-graduate covers four topics:

  1. Principles of Tawheed in Clinical Practice
  2. Fiqh Al-Ibaadah for the Sick
  3. Fiqh Muamalah in Medicine; and
  4. Ethics and Professionalism

The programme is implemented through interactive workshops and seminars conducted annually throughout the four years of post-graduate studies in their respective field of medicine.

The content of this book is useful for both Muslim and non-Muslim students when dealing with Muslim patients. For the Muslim patient, Ibaadah (worship) is ordained by God and by no means be neglected in any condition, regardless of health status.

Course learning outcome

Upon completing the lessons in this book, participants should be able to:

  1. Understand the fundamentals of ibaadah and rukhsa in Islam
  2. Identify and refer to authoritative body(ies) when searching for rulings related to fiqh
  3. Encourage Muslim patients to perform ibaadah according to their best ability during sickness
  4. Provide suitable environment for Muslim patients to perform ibaadah
  5. Demonstrate competency in providing counsel to Muslim patients with regards to Ibaadah during illness
